  CAN    ROVIRA

In 1863, Josep Rovira i Morera acquired the « Mas Monnar », a splendid property close to the Mediterranean and previously in the hands of the Monnar family tracing back to the 15th century. The new owner’s son, Antoni Rovira i Borrell built a brand new home in a neoclassical style which subsequently became the main residence, while the original “Mas Monnar” remained occupied by the caretakers.

The newly titled property became known as “Can Rovira” and currently comprises a ground floor with adjacent wine cellars and the 1st and 2nd floor as the family’s living quarters.

In the mid-19th century, the property was exploited primarily for agricultural purposes but most importantly for its extensive vineyards and large production of wine. In 1888, at the famous Universal Exhibition of Barcelona, a gold medal was awarded to “Alella can Rovira” for the wine produced on the domain. at the famous Universal Exhibition of Barcelona which had been produced at the domain.

In 1890, the third generation, Encarnació Rovira i Rosselló, married Raimon de Vilaclara and since then, the property has remained in the family for six generations.

With a population of around 9000, Alella is renowned as one of Europe’s smallest «appellation d’origine controlée » (AOC).

The vineyards are cultivated in sandy terrain, of granit origin, formed from a composition commonly known as « saulo ». The composition of the soil together with the microclimate and the nearby Mediterranean give the wine its fine characteristics.

The brightness of the Mediterranean together with the abundance of sunshine have resulted in Alella wines being highly appreciated since Roman times.

The white wines, elaborated between the 19th and 20th century were particularly renowned for their excellent quality. Today, the AOC Alella (DO Alella), produces a complete range of the best red, rosé and white wines, not forgetting their excellent method of production « champenoises » or « cavas.
